Established parties have lost support across the member states of the European Union. Yet party-based democracies go unchallenged. This raises the question of how political parties are able to perform functions that crucially contribute to the democratic legitimation of state authority. This monograph examines the features of legitimation in the party-based democracies of all 28 current EU member states.
