The block books published in the Late Middle Ages are early examples of printed book media that served to disseminate knowledge. Wood blocks were used as print templates, in which both texts and images were cut out. Block books were a new step in the diversification of print technology and not, as researchers have long claimed, a precursor form of printing with movable type.
