In addition, the author examines the imperial cult serving as one of the definitive foils for the interpretation of the New Testament scriptures and continues the debate on the status and the role of the genders in early Christianity. He also provides insight into the gradual development of rites and rituals as well as their reinterpretation in the incipient gnosis. On the whole, this volume presents a panorama of work on the history of religion in the field of the New Testament in a manner which is typical of the author and his understanding of exegesis.
