While much scholarly attention has already been paid to some of the various phenomena of affectionate language for example pet names and diminutive constructions the same cannot yet be claimed for affectionate language as such. The author of this volume is the first to present a theory of affectionate modes of speaking, grounding it empirically using a corpus study of Chilean Spanish.
