This study examines German-language travelogues about Greece written between 1908 and 1962. This is the first time that an important element of German discourse on Greece has been made accessible, described in broad strokes, and thoroughly analyzed. The range of subjects considered in this volume ranges from the gushing displays of subjectivity from the turn of the century (Gerhart Hauptmann, Hugo von Hofmannsthal) to the politically accentuated travelogues from the Weimar Republic and the National Socialist period (Erhart Kästner). It also includes the more skeptical and reticent attitudes that characterized the post-war period (Wolfgang Koeppen).
