For the first time, Eva Ebel presents the most important texts concerning Greco-Roman voluntary associations together with a German translation and a full commentary. This provides a solid basis for comparing the structure of these associations with early Christian communities and for examining the attractiveness of these communities, which the author has done, using Corinth as an example.

Numerous phenomena, such as for examples Paul's correspondence, can be interpreted against this backdrop and were viewed in this context during the past years.
