This book, written during the Second World War and published in English in 1944, was a warning cry to all those who value freedom and saw their freedom threatened by socialist trends and National Socialist aspirations. Using biting logic, a clear language and here and there cutting irony, Friedrich A. von Hayek provides proof that no one can honestly ignore: proof that socialism and political freedom are incompatible and that this applies to German National Socialism as well as to Russian socialism and every form of collectivism. He doesn't regard the loss of political freedom, the "road to serfdom", as the fate of Germany; for him it is the result of collectivism, which in his opinion also threatens other states from within.
