From the early Hollywood history on there has been a constant output of films concerning mental illnesses. However, not a single mental illness has been exploited so extensively than the rare syndrome of multiple personality disorder. Films concerning multiple personality disorder are a popular and enduring genre, whose influence can be seen throughout mainstream cinema. Therefore, exploration of literary texts dealing with multiple personality disorder and their adaptation to mainstream moving pictures is an interesting approach to psychology, literature and film studies. Despite being "detective story" and "crime story" narratives and confirmed to the codes of the psychological thriller, representations of multiple personality disorder correspond closely to contemporary thinking about its phenomenology and causes.
