The title figure of Waltharius, an exclusive research subject of German Studies since the time of the Brothers Grimm, has become interesting for other philologies as well over the last 120 years, repeatedly in the form of 'border crossings'. However, it has been impossible to reach a consensus even in the most elementary questions. Romance Studies is directly involved due to the problem complexes of Gualter del Hum, Gaiferos and the mother tongue of the Waltharius poet. Additional border crossings, however, are required to conduct new research on these problem complexes. This has become evident on the basis of new linguistic and onomastic observations in this book. Thus, almost an all-round monograph on one of the most multifaceted figures of medieval literature has evolved.

Die Walter-Gestalt, am bekanntesten als Titelgestalt des Waltharius, war seit den Brüdern Grimm zunächst Domäne der Germanistik und der sich konstituierenden Mittellatinistik; doch beschäftigt sie seit etwa 120 Jahren auch andere Philologien wie Romanistik, Slavistik und Orientalistik - immer wieder auch in Form von ,Grenzüberschreitungen' - , ohne dass bisher in den elementarsten Fragen ein Konsens erzielt wurde. Die Romanistik ist unmittelbar beteiligt durch die Problemkomplexe um Gualter del Hum, um Gaiferos und um die Muttersprache des Waltharius-Dichters, doch macht deren erneute Untersuchung, wie sie hier insbesondere auf Grund neuer linguistischer und onomastischer Beobachtungen unternommen wird, weitere Grenzüberschreitungen notwendig - nicht zuletzt in der Auseinandersetzung mit der These von Fradejas Lebrero zur Sage von Bälul ibn Marzuq als vermeintlicher Quelle sowohl der bekanntesten Gaiferos-Romanze (WH 173) wie des Waltharius. So ist (fast) eine Allround-Monographie zu einer der facettenreichsten Gestalten der mittelalterlichen Literatur entstanden.
