Following Hitler's invasion of Yugoslavia in 1941, Italian troops occupied large parts of the country and, together with Germany, established a brutal occupation regime. This regime had a troubled relationship with its Croatian ally, and fought bitter confrontations with Communist partisans. The author analyzes this terrible chapter in European history, whose repercussions continue to be felt today.
