Seit drei Tagen kann Mara ihre Augen nicht schließen, denn sobald das Licht ausgeht, raschelt es leise. Obwohl ihre Mutter ihr sagt, dass niemand im Zimmer ist, ist Mara vom Gegenteil überzeugt. Aber wer auch immer da ist, er ist ein Meister im Verstecken. Doch eines Nachts, als alle im Haus eingeschlafen sind, ertönt aus Maras Schrank ein gedämpftes Niesen. Welches Monster versteckt sich in ihrem Zimmer? Doch nicht nur Mara hat Angst, sondern auch ein kleines pelziges Monster namens Hatchi. Es ist nur aus einem Grund zu ihr gekommen: um seinen Hunger zu stillen. Aber es ist kein Hunger, wie wir ihn kennen, denn dieses ungewöhnliche Monster ernährt sich ausschließlich von Socken.
