This study explores the interconnections between image, perception, and the observed body in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It draws from medicine, natural philosophy, theology, and image theory to develop a historical 'phenomenology of embodiment': perception of a living body (corpus animatum) is understood in terms of the whole body, and perception (perceptio/conceptio) takes place at the level of the organism as a whole.
