The introduction of modern methods in Catholic biblical scholarship is one of the most dramatic chapters in the crisis of modernism in the Catholic Church. Vincent Zapletal played a key role in the German-speaking world. Highly talented, steadfast, and of almost inexhaustible working will, he overcame the challenges posed by his life as a scientist, university teacher, religious, and human being, and faced the oft-outsized tasks of the time.
