With a history spanning over two thousand years, geodesy belongs, along with astronomy and geography, to the oldest sciences that deal with the topic of the Earth or other celestial bodies. In this work, the development of geodesy is introduced from antiquity through the Middle Ages and the early modern era, right up to the middle of the 20th century, making use of an ever more heavily emphasized concentration on Germany.
