Andrew Jones takes a critical and radical stance towards the globalization debate, arguing that theories of globalization present dangers and contradictions for business practitioners. Critical of the prevailing approach and research methods of much management theory, he investigates the nature of organizational globalization within two of the world's supposedly most global industries - management consultancy and investment banking. Detailed interviews with senior managers are used to examine the often-ignored complexity of transnational business activity in these industries. Questions of corporate structure, managerial control, culture and the social activity of 'doing' global business are addressed from a sociological perspective. Aimed at academics, business people and policy-makers, the book's controversial arguments will provide food for thought for anyone thinking critically about how global business is to be understood and practised.
