12-year-old Eva Kotova came to California from her small Russian town when she was just three years old. She has an American accent, only speaks English, and celebrates Christmas the way Americans do. However, elements of Russia still echo around her, such as how her mother speaks her native language on the phone, and how she and Eva still have a Russian New Year celebration. Eva barely remembers her past or her family in Russia. One day, though, she discovers a notebook that not only gives her answers but also opens up questions about what she has been wondering.
