Five friends, all with plant names, band together in their after-school Science Club to complete projects around their school. Ms. Forrest, their teacher and Science Club Sponsor, provides "marching orders" that include planting flowers in the new school garden, transplanting vegetables from Ms. Pepper's 2nd grade class, caring for indoor plants in the classroom, and solving an erosion problem for Principal Oakes.

On a field trip to the local Arboretum, Iris, Kale, Ivy, Violet, and Jasmine discover something about themselves: they are all different, just like the plants. Their personalities and skills are all unique. And as the "platoon" works together, they learn respect and acceptance of their differences, especially as they welcome a new student to their classroom.

The Plant Platoon is an engaging early chapter book for science-loving young readers.
