Four years after Nagaro and his followers formed their covenant and set sail in their captured Mahuk war galley, he commands four ships and is known up and down the coast from his native Edrovir to the Mahuk Baar as Captain Nagaro, or as Kiraam Shaku-Tal, the Thief of Slaves. He and his men carry on a form of honorable piracy, attacking only Mahuk war galleys to free the men chained to the oars, an activity that has made Nagaro a hero to the common folk of Edrovir and caused the Emperor of the Mahuk Baar to put a price on his head. Nagaro hasn't forgotten how, seven years ago when he was seventeen, he was forced to marry the pincess by use of will-enslaving magic and suffered widespread ridicule as the "Idiot Prince" in consequence. But his former identity seems safely buried, and should remain so as long as he stays away from the king, the princess, and everyone else who knew him in Edrovir's capital city of Lankura. Though often not comfortable with his fame, Nagaro is otherwise content with the life he has built on the island of Pakoa. All of this is about to change, however, for he and his pirates have attracted the attention of the king of Edrovir. When Nagaro learns that Kuran, Edrovir's Lord of the Royal Fleet, is looking for him, he boldly decides to meet the man, setting himself on a course that will alter his life and ultimately change the history of his world.
