Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The following essay is an attempt to bring together in a connected form the scattered material that exists for the history of the Council in the Marches of Wales. The fullest account of the Council has hitherto been that by Judge Lewis in Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XII., which is supplemented by Mr. Lleufer Thomas's article in Vol. XIII. But Judge Lewis's account extends only to the year 1575, and since its publication much additional information has become available, partly through the further calendaring of the Domestic State Papers, and the publication of the Acts of the Privy Council (down to 1597) and of the Historical MSS. Commission Reports.
