Life is a Beach: A tale of of subculture in the early eighties.

An unlikely group of friends take to the road in a classic camper. Destination the South of France, to become beach doughnut sellers. Based on a true story.

This book is a window into 80's subculture in a seaside tourist town on the Mediterranean. Living on our wits and skills we weren't outlaws but were certainly outsiders. Shunned by some, and the authorities, we found our own path and filled the niches left open to us.

Life could be tough and unforgiving but this was also a place of opportunity and we would make it our own. Here I look back on the struggles and the achievements that eventually led to us, my friend Jerry and I, and a handful of others earning the self proclaimed title Kings of the Beach. 40 years on Jerry and I still look back on this as 'the best job we've ever had'. I really hope you enjoy it and get a sense of our lives that were.

Autorentext

I'm a trombonist with 40 years' experience on the UK live music and sound-system scene. These days I perform with, and record for various reggae artists and best known as King David Horns. In my other day job, I'm a designer and all round creative.

My life as a musician started quite suddenly with a 1984 following busking trip to a small festival called 'Glastonbury'. The previous year, in the summer of '83, I experienced this adventure which was to set me up for my life to follow. I brought back a new and positive sense of self-identity, confidence and ambition.
