This debut collection of stories about talk show hosts and their talking hands, a single women's activity group who write to prisoners, and a ukulele player lost at sea is storytelling that's as unique as it is compelling. The observations are as sharp as Flaubert's, and the characters are as complex as those created by George Saunders (and as witty as George Sanders.) Contrivances proves that drama is comedy when you play it long enough.
