Gloucestershire at the end of the 19th century. Jeremy page, 17 years old, is hired as a gardener at the Cheltenham estate. It's the story of an impossible love between Jeremy and Mary, the daughter of the mansion's mistress. In addition, the young man is involved in a criminal case that will lead him to forced labour. Then begins a real descent into hell.
