Diane screamed, "Mary, watch out!" The baseball was hit with a mighty force and the sound of the strike ricocheted around the ballpark as if a train was colliding with a rock wall. Fans heard the echoes of cracking bones. Gasps of shock were everywhere. Mary lay there motionless as Diane scrambled to help. "Mary, Mary, answer me!" Diane frantically checked Mary to see if she was breathing. "Please let me know you're okay!" But there was no movement. No reply. Mary was motionless and out cold.
First aid responders were at the scene immediately as the game came to a screeching halt. Fans around the poor girl did not move, hoping and praying for the best result.
The batter stood at home plate in disbelief. The netting around the first baseline was in place to stop the ball, but it hadn't.
Mary lay there, long gone into deep subconsciousness. Where had she been, and what was she doing? "Mom, why have you done this to me? If you loved Dad, how can you now love someone else? You started dating another guy when I was at Mama Cossitt's for the summer. I don't understand. Does the flag you received at the funeral mean anything? Mama, please help me! My mind is going crazy! What is happening?"
"Calm down, young lady," stated Mama Cossitt. "Let's continue practicing your piano and singing that superb song you wrote."
