As a forensic pathologist, Doctor Sloan Madison gets to play detective in her job as assistant medical examiner of Volusia County, Florida. That can be fun, until someone of means doesn't want you poking around. A routine autopsy takes a strange turn when Sloan stumbles upon evidence of intentional death, changing a death by natural causes into a homicide. But this case involves presidential politics and a large fortune. At the same time, her personal life gets complicated, requiring a re-evaluation of her job. Sloan grapples with the balance between job and family which isn't easy when you're a target.
