An 18th-century German scholar who devoted his life to the study of ancient art in Western Europe, Johann Joachim Winckelmann was the first scholar to outline the distinctions between works of Egyptian, Etruscan, Roman, and Greek origins. Based at Rome's great Vatican library, he commissioned many illustrations of scenes from classical mythology and published them at his own expense.
