John Oxenham was a prolific writer, producing more than 40 novels, a number of books of verse, a large body of poetry, and short fiction. His collection Bees in Amber: A Little Book of Thoughtful Verse (1913) was a popular bestseller, and he was a major contributor to Jerome K. Jerome's The Idler magazine. 'A Mystery of the Underground' was one of his most successful short stories.
