Tacy Jensen gets shanghaied into a military program when her sister and a classmate steal a top secret military space craft to escape an attack from a fierce alien enemy by putting her into the computer gel interface that merges with the nerve and brain function of human beings. When Tacy successfully emerges from the machine works over 30 years have passed. She now has to deal with soreness of her altered body, the military training for the ships, oppressive protocol, and blatant discrimination for being someone who stole the ship rather than an official part of the military. She struggles for health and freedom as she also learns what happened to her sister and friend in those missing 30 or so years.
