The word "Bank" is believed to be derived from the Greek word BANKQUE which means a bench or Italian word BANCO meanings thereby a heap or mound. According to Macleod, the meaning of word 'Bank' is heap or mountain and it indicates towards joint fund collected by many persons. Greek work BANQUE referred to a bench at which, money lenders and money changers used to sit and display their coins. As the topic of this dissertation broadly deals with Financial Management of banking units, it has been found appropriate to carry out literature review under two major headings: 1. PERIPHERAL LITERATURE REVIEW dealing with banking and financial management in general and 2. FOCAL LITERATURE REIVEW dealing with bank specific financial management, risk management, Asset Liability Management and such other interrelation concepts.
