For better or for worse, every person makes a difference. Achilles Spanos has had enough of the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs. After being mauled by a bear shifter and barely surviving, convinced that nothing he does makes a difference, Achilles is ready to hand in his badge and gun. But with no clue about what to do with the rest of his life, he agrees to take on one more assignment: speaking with a mysterious man who can make wishes come true. Due to a cadre of corrupt powerful men, the world grows bleaker by the day, and the Bureau chief hopes that the wish-granter, Dee Martell, can help tip the balance back toward good. The opposing forces, however, are doing everything in their power to have him tip the balance in their favor instead. The problem is, even Dee doesn't understand his talent-or have any conviction what he wants to do with it. After living his life as a loner, Dee is now caught up in a deadly tug-of-war... with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. Thrown together against their will, Achilles and Dee face impossible odds. But they learn they also have powerful allies. As they struggle to distinguish monsters from heroes, they discover that hope is a mighty weapon and that even the smallest effort matters.

Kim Fielding is very pleased every time someone calls her eclectic. Winner of the BookLife Prize for Fiction, a Lambda Award finalist and three-time Foreword INDIE finalist, she has migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States and currently lives in California, where she long ago ran out of bookshelf space. She's a university professor who dreams of being able to travel and write full time. She also dreams of having two daughters who fully appreciate her, a husband who isn't obsessed with football, and a house that cleans itself. Some dreams are more easily obtained than others.
