A shocking incident occurs in 1970's Boston. An historic Boston cemetery is vandalized; the mummified bodies are horrifically desecrated. The quiet community is shocked. Two Boston Police Detectives swing into action, but the battle turns out to be spiritual and psychological. Adjustment Counselors and a Psychologist from the Boston Public Schools do their best to help. But the real solution comes from an unexpected source - Toby, a mysterious dog with golden curls and the power of speech.

Is Toby heaven sent or a vengeful demon? He joins ghostly men from the disturbed tomb who torment the grave robber, and drive him into a gang ambush. But Toby also displays a merciful healing power. He cures a retired firefighter's crippling back pain, gives a non-verbal boy the ability to speak, and delights the neighborhood children. "Dogs can't talk, they can only bark," says a Mom to her young daughter. But the Mom is soon proven wrong!

Toby saves a Catholic Nun from a drunken pervert, re-energize her vocation and saves a pregnant teenager's baby from abortion. In the end, Toby saves the grave robber from an inferno that destroys a ring of thieves and criminal groomers.

Toby's biblical identity is revealed in the last pages.
