Jim, a coloured man who was adopted into a white family as a baby. When he is five years old he is joined by a baby sister. He later marries an Australian woman and brings her back to England. He loves his wife, his job in the Royal Navy and his country. He thinks his life is complete until fate deems otherwise. His life gets complicated when he realises that the woman he really loves is legally unavailable.
