Clover and Jerome Hill move into Hill Manor just before the Great Fire of 1889. When Jerome uncovers old love letters between Clover and her former flame, James Moore, he vanishes; his fate seemingly tied to the Monroe Street Bridge. Haunted by guilt and James's lingering presence, Clover falls into a trance and sets in motion the fire that will reduce Spokane to ash. Before disappearing herself, she leaves behind their child; August Moore in James's care, a final act that binds them all to the curse that lingers over the city.
