Winner: NAUTILUS Book Award for Religion and Spirituality of Diverse Traditions, 2024 Winner: PAGE TURNER Award for Creative Non-Fiction, 2024 Finalist: FOREWORD INDIES Book of the Year Awards, 2024 Finalist: IAN Book of the Year Award for Multicultural Non-Fiction, 2024 Manisha Jane has always been the black sheep of her family, and never more so than on her wedding day. She wishes she could tell her loved ones the extraordinary story of her lightning-fast encounter with Patrick - the elusive Frenchman - in Los Angeles only three months earlier, but that would be unthinkable. It would only ruffle their conventional feathers and lead to more misunderstandings. Somewhere in the gap between East and West, science and religion, the old age and the new, Truth had become taboo... In a captivating literary non-fiction style, Manisha Jane shares her intimate story of spontaneous transformation through Sahaja Yoga, a meditation practice that is still little known and poorly understood in the West. We follow the author from her home in Sydney, Australia, as she embarks on a journey of self-knowledge, healing and interconnection, guided by an ancient knowledge traditionally kept secret. Gradually she embraces a universal culture of the Spirit that leads her to India, to her unconventional marriage, and ultimately far beyond. At the heart of this grassroots spiritual revolution, we find the teachings of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, whose timeless contribution is now emerging as a key turning point in the expression of our subtle selves, and the realisation of our highest potential. Throughout her memoir, Manisha skilfully weaves together many issues pertinent to the world today, including ecology, quantum physics, the intelligence of the heart, and the role of women in the modern West. She also introduces us to the beauty of Sanskrit - a sacred language and a precious tool for understanding the human being, that illuminates the wisdom of the world's major religions and the path toward our spiritual sovereignty. Recognised for its vivid storytelling and scholarly framework, Truth Was Once Taboo has won several honours in the field of spiritual/religious and multicultural literature. Featuring guided practices and a glossary, this book is a must-have for anyone curious about the path to awakening and eager to discover their untapped potential.
