Martin Gertler promovierte 1999 interdisziplinär zur Rezeption einer TV-Sendereihe und 2025 zur Meinungsbildung in der Klimakrise durch weltanschaulich bestimmte Denkmodelle. 2002 wurde er Professor für Mediengestaltung, Medienproduktion, Medientheorien und Rezeptionsforschung, 2008 zusätzlich Professor für Kommunikationswissenschaft und Gründungsrektor einer weiterbildenden Universität. Seit 2011 betreut er vorwiegend berufsbegleitende Promovierende an internationalen Universitäten.
