The author, the grandchild of immigrant parents from Eastern Europe has always had an interest in the survival of the underdog in the clash of empires. After the fall of the Berlin wall, he visited people from his mother's side in Slovakia, who still mark the spot of the German invasions over their mountains and which they survived. On his father's side the same war largely eliminated his people in the area around Lviv, Ukraine. The author's journeys have also taken him to Guatemala, where villagers were forced to flee up into the mountains and have created a beautiful life. The author has unconsiously drawn upon this history in the creation of this archetypal tale.

Flo and Jim are telescoped into a Utopian world, where Little People have beautiful, crystal houses and plants that sing. But they soon find this world disrupted by an invasion of giants, who have come to erase the land's past and take from its present and future. Allying with a time-traveling mammal/dinosaur like creature, the couple cast their lot with the Little People. Read this story for a portrayal of the archetypal fight between the Little People and Giants, in which it's shown how courage and being connected to beauty will enable the triumph of "Little Peoples" across the world.
