Natalie Alexander feels unworthy of love and moves to southern Illinois where she hopes to leave her past behind.

Then she meets handsome high school teacher Nick Norton over a platter of cookies. But she isn't looking for love, or is she? Though Nick intrigues her, she soon learns he's one of those religious types. But they strike up a friendship and Natalie is drawn in. When Nick is sent to the hospital and has a long term stay, she falls even deeper.
