Celosia receives the news at age thirty-four that she has become afflicted by the Dark: a mysterious malady caused by a lack of love, in any of its forms, in its subject's life. It is a malady with a staggeringly high rate of mortality once it has festered enough; it is not long before her possible death consumes her thoughts.

Meanwhile, a succession of life-altering events facilitates twenty-seven-year-old Muiren moving back into their parents' home for the first time since they reached adulthood. Though they have a close relationship with their parents, after their main friend group imploding, and learning to live with three much younger siblings, things have begun to feel more foreign than ever before.

As the rainy season ends, and a work project has the two make each other's acquaintance, both can tell their lives will be changing. But as they soon learn, love is not merely a feeling, but a choice - and so, the question becomes less about their feelings for one another, and more about what past demons they are willing to conquer to remain in each other's lives.
