I have written two books about Whitehead. The first, Whitehead: The Town with No Streets, is a comprehensive history of the development of the town from its early beginnings to the present day. The second is a history of Whitehead Golf Club, expanded from a chapter in the original book and written to celebrate the club's centenary in 2004. While working on both books, I gathered a large number of photographs, pictures and other documents, most of which were incorporated in one or other or both publications. However, for various reasons, I was not able to include many of the photographs which I had accumulated and I would not wish that these should be lost to posterity. In addition, technology continues to advance and I am persuaded that some of the reproduction in the original two books may be improved upon. It is my belief that old pictures of places and events transmit a strong link with the past, often much better than the written word. Consequently, I have compiled here a practical history of Whitehead in which the pictures are left, for the most part, without further comment from me.
