As an attributive, the word dairy refers to milk-based products, derivatives and processes, and the animals and workers involved in their production. A dairy is a business enterprise established for the harvesting of animal milk - mostly from cows or goats, but also from buffalo, sheep, horses or camels - for human consumption. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) was established in 1965 with the mission of making dairying a vehicle to a better future for millions of grassroots milk producers. This commitment has been rewarded with India's emergence as the world's largest milk producing nation. Dairy cooperatives account for the major share of processed liquid milk marketed in the country. Over the years, brands like Amul, Mother Dairy, Vijaya, Verka, Saras, Nandini, Milma and Gokul created by cooperatives have become synonymous with quality and value. The present book is concerned with the development of dairy co-operatives in India. The role played by co-operative as well as private organisations is explained in the book. The book also discusses the challenges before the dairy co-operatives in new economic era. An important book for all those related to dairy industry.
