Hydrogen is the first element on the periodic table and forms around 75% of the matter in the universe. It is also the primary component of the Sun. It is of interest to scientists on both a small and large scale, from quantum mechanics to cosmology. With regards to technology, hydrogen is one of the most promising options for storing energy from renewables, with hydrogen-based fuels transporting energy over long distances. Beyond this, hydrogen in its condensed material form is predicted to have interesting physical properties, from exotic metallic behaviour to superfluidity and high-temperature superconductivity. In fact, various phases of condensed hydrogen are currently under intense experimental scrutiny and newer features are being discovered.

This book aims to explore the journey of hydrogen from element to condensed matter with exotic physical properties and enormous technological promise as clean energy source and energy carrier. Divided into two parts, the first half of the book covers the physics of hydrogen and the second half covers the various uses of hydrogen and hydrogen related technologies.

This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students of hydrogen science and technology, and renewable energies. The interdisciplinary coverage will be relevant to departments of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, chemical engineering and energy.
