What if emotional and behavioral symptoms we experience are not solely mental health disorders, but are also signals from deep within our bodies-guiding us toward uncovering hidden underlying causes?

In Counseling From Within, licensed professional counselor and trauma specialist, Staci Duvall invites readers to look beyond traditional talk therapy and explore the biological, nutritional, genetic, and environmental influences that impact our mental health and overall wellness. Blending her clinical expertise with her own personal journey through integrative medicine, this book offers a thoughtful and compassionate view of what we might be missing in talk therapy-holistic healing.

While honoring the power of the therapeutic relationship and evidence-based counseling practices, Staci gently encourages readers to expand the lens from which we view mental health care. She explores the role of the microbiome (gut), inflammation, genetic variants, autonomic dysfunction (POTS), nutrient imbalances, detoxification pathways, and lifestyle factors that can mimic-or intensify-psychological and physical symptoms. Through an integrative framework, she teaches the reader how to incorporate functional medicine principles, complementary and alternative (CAM) practices, and genetic variant data into individualized counseling treatment goals focused on healing from within and symptom management.

This book is for:

  • Counselors and helping professionals seeking a broader, ethically grounded integrative perspective
  • Clients who feel "stuck" in therapy and wonder if something deeper is contributing to their symptoms
  • Individuals searching for root-cause answers beyond symptom management
  • Anyone curious about the connection between mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, and relational dimensions

Inside, readers will find:

  • Historical and current-day perspectives on mental health diagnosing and treatment
  • Practical tools for integrating lifestyle, nutrition, and complementary strategies alongside therapy
  • An explanation of the 5-R gut-focused healing model
  • The clinical process of change is explained through stories and fables that encourage us through the difficulties of change
  • Insights into AD/HD through both traditional and functional frameworks-from leading specialists and brain-based specialists
  • A collaborative exploration of how genetics, toxins, inflammation, and autonomic nervous system dysregulation can imitate psychological disorders
  • Specific ways to support genetic variant needs (MTHFR, COMT, and MAO-A) while detoxifying the body
  • Details of how Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome often unknowingly presents in mental health care
  • Ways to identify Dysautonomia (including POTS and post-viral flares) that mimic anxiety, panic, and other mental health diagnoses
  • Real-life reflections and tips from the author's personal health journey and decades of counseling experience

Counseling From Within encourages thoughtful collaboration between counselors, clients, medical professionals, and integrative providers while empowering the reader to ask tough questions about your own healing journey and clinical practice.
