Van Diemen's Land (VDL) was the early name of Tasmania (changed in the 1850s) The British Government used VDL as a dumping ground for her worst convicts. Following sentence it was impossible for them to return their home and a new life had to be made. it brought out resilience in these banished souls to grow a new life on this strange but beautiful island state of Australia.
