In 1892, Amy, an orphaned young woman, came as a mail-order bride to California, but someone else had written the wonderful letters for abusive, drunken Josiah Overton. When her husband dies before she gives birth to her son, Thomas, Amy is relieved but terrified. Josiah's shack is to be sold for unpaid taxes, and she has nowhere to go.

Howard DuPont, a handsome young lawyer, finds himself the guardian of his sister Jane's two-and-a half-year-old daughter Camille when Jane, an unwed mother, dies. When his powerful and influential father takes Howard to court to get custody of Camille, Howard realizes he needs a wife.

Although they barely knew each other, and Amy is terribly fearful after two years of abuse, Amy agrees to a marriage of convenvience to have a home for her son and to help Howard keep Camille. Slowly, they get to know each other, and Amy's fear begins to subside as they build a home and family together. But can love grow, can Amy ever find her brother and sister, and can Howard ever reconcile with his father?
