Robbed of her inheritance, Eby escapes from Brazil to seek help in Trinidad, where she finds herself caught up in a struggle between slave owners and abolitionists. When she is offered refuge in Havana, she falls in with a couple there who are plotting to push the Spanish out of Cuba, but after being arrested and sentenced to be deported, she is freed by the rebels and taken to Mexico to join a group of revolutionaries fighting for the rights of the Mayan people. She participates in the group's brutal skirmishes until she is lured away by a society matron, the wife of a high official in the Mexican government. Her comfortable life with the couple unravels thanks to the schemes of a lecherous priest. Eby finds herself alone and wealthy, but restless, until fate leads her to cross paths with a rancher from California who, it seems, may change her mind about love.
