At first glance, those who wanted to form associations in the Roman Empire did not have it easy: the Roman law of association was shaped by mistrust and hostility. However, more associations emerged between Augustus and Diocletian than would be seen again until the modern period. This study drawns on material from all over the empire to comprehensively illustrate the position of associations within the Roman Imperial order.
