No urban development was an expression of the struggle for legitimation of the communist rulers of the People's Republic of Poland. The author examines decades-long open spaces at three historical sites in Warsaw to explore the conflict between revolutionary new beginnings, national traditions, and modernizing urban development. This focus exposes controversy and surprisingly open public debate between experts, politicians, and society.
