In this publication 80 recipes contained in 24 manuscripts from 11 libraries have been published for the first time, which depict the preparation of black ink, colour ink and base coats for byzantine (15th century) miniature paintings. In the first section the texts are edited (following the literary method), translated and philological as well as topical annotations added. In the second section a technological commentary adds insight into the reconstruction and analysis of the recipes. An alphabetical glossary examines the terms referred to in the recipes, products and applications and depicts the results of physical and natural scientific research of ink in original manuscripts; these in turn are compared with written told material. A glossary of Greek termini, a general index as well as 12 partially coloured tables conclude the book, which represents a reference guide to the analyses of material culture of Greek manuscripts and to middle-age literary culture.
