The Legend With its rich history and cultural heritage, Rome has always been a source of inspiration for scholars, artists, and researchers. Its narrow streets and ancient ruins hold countless mysteries waiting to be explored. Wilhelm von Humboldt, one of the foremost scholars of the nineteenth century, developed a keen interest in the art and culture of antiquity while still a student, alongside his academic studies. A particularly formative period began in 1802, when he was appointed Prussian representative to the Holy See, a position he held until 1808. Renowned for his intellectual curiosity and his pioneering contributions to education and linguistics, Humboldt was captivated by the beauty and cultural wealth of Rome. Among the stories that attracted his attention was the legend of the Fountain of Callixtus, the Pozzo. For centuries, tales had surrounded this mysterious Roman well, whose waters were said to possess extraordinary powers and to bestow wisdom and knowledge upon those who drank from it. When Wilhelm was compelled to leave Rome in 1808, his wife Caroline von Humboldt remained there with their children. At San Calisto in Trastevere, she learned of the Pozzo, which the Benedictines wished to sell, and succeeded in acquiring the marble fountain for 150 scudi. Today, the Fountain of Saint Callixtus stands in the atrium of Schloss Tegel, the Humboldt family residence in Berlin. The correspondence between Caroline and Wilhelm von Humboldt, covering the period from Wilhelm's departure from Rome in 1808 to his arrival in Berlin in 1809, offers an intimate portrait of their relationship. Their letters recount the events of everyday life as well as moments of profound personal loss. The volume also explores Caroline von Humboldt's life and the remarkable intellectual, literary and artistic circles around her. It introduces personalities and families associated with the Humboldts and their age, including the von Arnims, Sophie von La Roche and Gabriele von Bülow, while tracing cultural connections between Rome and Berlin.
