This volume of documents is a contribution to research on the academic history of the discipline. The sources are from numerous archives and almost without exception have not been published previously. Part I contains documents from the establishment of the first academic chair for German Philology up to the differentiation into Old German Philology and New German Philology. The second part focuses on the seminars of German philology, i.e. what preceded them, their conception and function. The third part is devoted to the training of German teachers at universities.
