The Christmas Porringer is a delicate holiday tale in which a simple household object becomes the vessel of charity, memory, and spiritual renewal. Written in the graceful, decorative prose characteristic of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century children's literature, the story joins the tradition of Christmas moral fiction shaped by Dickensian sentiment yet softened for young readers. Stein's attention to domestic detail, old customs, and the emotional life of childhood gives the narrative a quietly luminous atmosphere. Evaleen Stein, an American writer, poet, and artist from Indiana, was especially drawn to history, folklore, and the imaginative education of children. Her literary work often reveals an antiquarian sensibility: she delighted in objects, rituals, costumes, and stories from earlier times. That interest helps explain The Christmas Porringer, where material culture is not mere decoration but a means of recovering tenderness, continuity, and moral feeling. This book is warmly recommended to readers who value classic Christmas stories, refined prose, and children's literature with ethical depth. It will appeal to families, teachers, collectors of holiday fiction, and anyone interested in how small acts of giving can carry profound symbolic weight. Zusammenfassung
Karen is a little girl who lives with her grandmother in the Flemish city of Bruges, where at Christmas time children set their little shoes on the hearth and these they expect the Christ-child himself to fill with gifts. One Christmas, Karen decides that she wants to give a present to a Christ-child because it's unfair that he doesn't get any. She goes out with her grandmother and buys an earthenware porringer which gets stolen by a notorious Bruges thief Han, only to serve as a fine set up for a Christmas miracle.
